ULTRA-COMPACT, LOW-COST PLASMO-PHOTONIC BIMODAL MULTIPLEXING SENSOR PLATFORMS AS PART OF A HOLISTIC SOLUTION FOR FOOD QUALITY MONITORING

DEVELOP A NOVEL PLASMO-PHOTONIC SENSOR PLATFORM

Develop a novel ultra-compact, cost-effective, plasmo-photonic bimodal sensor platform with on-chip light generation suitable for farm-to-fork applications.

DEVELOP THE GRACED SENSING DEVICES

Two versions of sensing devices will be developed. Both types will exploit the novel GRACED sensors. The first one will be a portable instrument for laboratory & field analysis of all types of samples. The second device type will be an autonomous sensing node to be deployed for unattended field measurements in water/liquid samples only, particularly useful for production systems that foresee minimum human intervention -such as vertical/urban farming.

DEVELOP THE DATA ANALYTICS AND SDSS PLATFORM

The data analytics platform will include data from the measurements performed by GRACED devices (respecting GDPR and user requirements) as well as other data sources (i.e. environmental) collected on the platform, to assist in the decision making process. The platform will build upon its internal property graph to provide graph enhanced machine learning (Graph ML) capabilities with the ultimate purpose to provide descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics as a smart Decision support System (sDSS). From this information, key farm2fork applications will be set-up.

VALIDATE THE COMPLETE APPROACH AND ITS IMPACT

The approach will be validated in different production & distribution systems, related to the F&V sector: a) a conventional farming system in open-air farms and the follow-up steps of food processing for preparing cooked meals and frozen vegetable packages for the consumers, b) a novel, urban farming ecosystem, producing fruits and vegetables locally and using them in in-situ restaurants, c) a short value chain based on agro-ecology and direct distribution of fresh products from farmers to consumers and restaurants, d) a semi-automatic farm producing mushrooms and distributing them to supermarkets & wholesalers.
